The second “I’ll Kick A Brick (For My Man)” kicked in, I felt it — that gritty, groove-soaked energy that The Boneshakers do better than almost anyone. As someone who lives and breathes pop but has a not-so-secret obsession with blues and soul, this track felt like a glorious collision of my musical worlds.
There’s an undeniable swagger to this one. Randy Jacobs lays down that unmistakable funk-driven guitar, tight and tasty, while Jenny Langer comes in like a storm — all fire, grit, and attitude. Her vocals don’t just sing the lyrics; they own them. She’s fierce but soulful, commanding but cool — think Aretha meets Betty Davis with a rock ‘n’ roll edge. There’s nothing polished or overly processed here, and that’s exactly what makes it pop — ironically, by not trying to.
Ron Holloway’s sax solo is pure heat, sliding right into the pocket without ever feeling overdone, while Gregg Bissonette’s drumming gives the track its thumping heartbeat. It’s danceable, dirty, and deliciously defiant.
“I’ll Kick A Brick (For My Man)” is bold, bluesy funk with a soul that hits harder than most pop singles I’ve heard this year and that’s saying something.
